Solar Panel Not Producing?
If your solar panels have stopped generating power or output has dropped a lot, there are a few likely causes. Here's what to look for and when to call for help.
Request a DiagnosticWhy Panels Stop Producing
A panel that's not producing can come from a single component failure or a few overlapping issues. These are the most common ones we see.
Shading
New tree growth, nearby construction, or seasonal sun angle changes can reduce or block sunlight reaching your panels
Panel Damage
Cracks, hot spots, or delamination from storms, debris impact, or long-term wear can drop affected panels to zero output
Inverter Failure
If your inverter is faulted or offline, it can't convert the DC power your panels produce into usable AC electricity
Wiring Issues
Loose connections, corroded terminals, or rodent damage to wiring can interrupt the flow of electricity from panels to your home
Diagnostic Steps
Check Your Monitoring App
Open your solar monitoring app and see if it shows production data. If the app shows zero or is offline, note when the last reading came in.
Look at the Inverter
Check the inverter for any error codes, warning lights, or a blank display. A solid green light usually means normal operation.
Inspect the Breaker Panel
Confirm the solar breaker hasn't tripped. If it has, reset it once. If it trips again right away, stop and call a technician.
Check for Obstructions
Look at your roof safely from the ground. Heavy snow, fallen branches, or major debris buildup can block panels entirely.
Review Recent Changes
Think about what changed recently: a power outage, router replacement, new construction nearby, or storm damage.
Call for a Professional Diagnostic
If none of the above turns up the cause, the issue likely needs hands-on testing with specialized equipment.
What Our Technicians Check
After the diagnostic, you get a written report with findings and recommended next steps. No pressure to commit to repairs on the spot.
