FirstEnergy operates three Ohio utilities that span the state's largest population centers: Cleveland, Akron, Youngstown, Mansfield, and Toledo. We design and install systems for all three, and the interconnection process is similar across them.

    Three Utilities, One Process

    Ohio Edison

Northeast and central Ohio, including Akron, Youngstown, and Mansfield

    The Illuminating Company (CEI)

Greater Cleveland area and surrounding suburbs

    Toledo Edison

Northwest Ohio, including Toledo and surrounding communities

How Net Metering Works in Ohio

Ohio law requires investor-owned utilities, including FirstEnergy's Ohio companies, to offer net metering to residential solar customers. When your panels produce more electricity than you use, the surplus flows to the grid and you earn a credit. Those credits offset your usage during lower-production periods.

    How Your Bill Changes

After solar, your FirstEnergy Ohio bill still includes a customer charge and distribution fees. The generation portion of your bill gets reduced by net metering credits. During months when your system produces more than you use, your bill can drop to the basic service charge.

    Credit Structure

Net metering credits with FirstEnergy Ohio apply at the full retail rate for the generation portion of your bill. Credits carry forward month to month. At the end of your annual period, any excess credits may pay out at a lower avoided-cost rate, so right-sizing your system matters.

    Getting Connected

    The Interconnection Process

We handle the paperwork and coordination with your FirstEnergy Ohio utility. Here's what to expect.

    1

    System Design

We design your system based on your energy usage and roof or property characteristics. Our team handles all engineering and layout.

    2

    Interconnection Application

We submit the interconnection application to your FirstEnergy Ohio utility. This is the formal request to connect your solar system to the grid.

    3

    Utility Review

FirstEnergy reviews the application and confirms the system meets their technical and safety standards. Residential systems typically move through review quickly.

    4

    Installation and Inspection

After approval, we install the system and coordinate with the utility for meter installation and a final inspection.

    5

    System Activation

Once the utility grants permission to operate, your system begins producing energy and you start earning net metering credits.
