# Solar for PPL Electric Utilities Customers

PPL Electric Utilities serves eastern and central Pennsylvania, from Lancaster and York through Harrisburg, the Lehigh Valley, and the Scranton and Wilkes-Barre area. Their net metering program lets you earn credits for the solar power your home generates.

## Net metering with PPL Electric Utilities

PPL Electric Utilities participates in Pennsylvania's net metering program, which Pennsylvania requires of every investor-owned electric distribution company in the state. When your system generates more electricity than your home uses, the excess goes to the grid and you earn kilowatt-hour credits. Those credits offset your usage during times when your panels produce less, like evenings or cloudy days.

## Billing after solar

Your PPL bill still includes a fixed customer charge and distribution fees. The generation portion (usually the biggest part of the bill) gets offset by the energy your panels produce and the net metering credits you have banked. During high-production months, your bill may drop to the basic service charges.

## Credit rollover and true-up

Credits are applied at the full retail rate during the billing period and carry forward month to month. Pennsylvania runs a 12-month rolling cycle, and at the annual true-up any remaining excess credits are compensated at the price-to-compare rate, which is typically lower than retail. We size every system to match your household's actual usage, so you are not overproducing and losing value at the lower payout.

## The interconnection process

1. **Site assessment and design**, we evaluate your property and energy usage to design a system that fits your needs. Housing across the PPL territory ranges from Lancaster County farmhouses to Lehigh Valley colonials and Scranton-area Victorians.
2. **Interconnection application**, we submit the interconnection application to PPL Electric Utilities on your behalf.
3. **Utility review and approval**, PPL reviews the application to confirm the system meets their technical requirements. Most residential systems are approved without issue.
4. **Installation and meter upgrade**, once approved, we install the system and coordinate with PPL for the bi-directional meter installation. Pennsylvania requires the utility to provide that meter at no additional cost.
5. **Permission to operate**, after a final inspection, PPL grants permission to operate. Your system starts producing power and earning net metering credits.
