# Frequently Asked Questions

## Top questions

### Getting Started

#### How much does solar installation cost?

Individual prices may vary greatly. Equipment, roof complexity, promotions, financing, and site-specific work can all change what you pay. The information that follows is general illustration only, not a quote or guarantee. With a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), there's no upfront cost; you just pay a fixed monthly rate for the power your panels produce. About 95% of our customers go this route. For cash purchase, many residential systems land in the $15,000-$35,000 range before incentives, but yours could be higher or lower. We give free, detailed quotes either way.

#### How long does installation take?

Typical installs take one day, though larger or more complex systems can take longer. The whole process from signing to activation usually runs 6-12 weeks, mostly waiting on permitting.

#### Do I need to replace my roof first?

If your roof needs replacement in the next 10 years, we recommend doing it before solar. We can bundle solar with roofing coordinated through trusted partners.

#### How do I get started with solar?

Request a free quote through our website or call (877) 869-1458. We assess your property, design a custom system, handle all permitting and utility paperwork, and complete the installation.

### Costs & Payment Options

#### How much will I save?

Savings depend on your home, energy usage, and utility rates. We give you a personalized projection in your free quote so you can see what to expect.

#### What payment options do you offer?

Two paths. About 95% of our customers go with a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA): $0 upfront, a third-party owner installs and maintains the system, and you pay a fixed monthly rate designed to be lower than your current utility cost. The other 5% buy the system outright with cash and own it. See our Terms of Service for important limitations on website pricing and projections.

#### Do you offer solar loans?

We do not offer solar loans. We offer two paths instead. Most homeowners choose our $0-down PPA: you pay nothing upfront and a fixed monthly rate designed to be lower than your current utility bill. If you'd rather own the system outright, a cash purchase captures the full benefit of net metering, any SREC income in PA, and applicable state property tax exemptions.

### Pennsylvania: Net Metering, Incentives & Permits

#### What solar incentives are available for Pennsylvania homeowners?

Pennsylvania homeowners benefit from full retail-rate net metering through most utilities, sales tax exemption on solar equipment, and local property tax exemptions in many municipalities. Cash buyers who own their system also earn SREC (Solar Renewable Energy Credit) income for years after installation. Most homeowners pair these benefits with our $0-down PPA, a fixed monthly rate designed to be less than the utility's, with nothing paid upfront.

#### How does net metering work in Pennsylvania?

When your solar system produces more electricity than your home uses, the excess is sent to the grid and you receive a kilowatt-hour credit on your utility bill. These credits offset your usage during times when your panels produce less energy.

#### Which Pennsylvania utilities offer net metering?

All investor-owned electric utilities in Pennsylvania are required to offer net metering under Act 213. This includes Duquesne Light, PECO, PPL Electric, Penelec, Met-Ed, and Penn Power.

#### What happens to excess credits at the end of the year in PA?

Pennsylvania uses a 12-month rolling cycle. At the annual true-up, any remaining excess credits are compensated at the utility's price-to-compare rate, which is typically lower than the full retail rate. That said, every system we design is custom-sized to match your household's actual energy usage, so you're not overproducing and losing value at the lower payout. The goal is to offset your bill, not generate a big surplus that gets paid out at a discount.

#### What does permitting and interconnection look like in Pennsylvania?

Your installer submits an electrical permit to your local municipality and a formal interconnection request to your utility. The utility reviews system size, equipment, and safety; timelines depend on workload but often range from a few weeks to a couple of months. Inspections and a new or reprogrammed meter complete the process before you can operate legally.

### Ohio: Net Metering, Incentives & Permits

#### What solar incentives does Ohio offer?

Ohio homeowners benefit from net metering at full retail rates for systems up to 25 kW and a state property tax exemption for renewable energy equipment, so adding solar won't increase your home's assessed value. Ohio does charge sales tax on solar installations. Most homeowners pair these with our $0-down PPA, locking in a fixed monthly rate designed to come in below current utility pricing.

#### How does net metering work in Ohio?

Ohio requires investor-owned utilities to offer net metering. When your solar system produces more electricity than your home uses, the excess is sent to the grid and you receive a kilowatt-hour credit on your bill.

#### Which Ohio utilities offer net metering?

All investor-owned utilities in Ohio offer net metering, including AEP Ohio, Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company (CEI), Toledo Edison, Duke Energy Ohio, and Dayton Power and Light.

#### How do permitting and interconnection work for solar in Ohio?

Projects need a local building or electrical permit from your city or county and a utility interconnection application with one-line diagrams and equipment specs. The utility studies safety and grid impact; typical approval takes several weeks to a few months. A final inspection and meter change or configuration unlock permission to operate.

### The Installation Process

#### How long does a typical solar installation take in Pennsylvania?

Typical on-site construction is often completed in about one day once equipment arrives, but outliers based on system size and complexity might take additional time. End-to-end, most Pennsylvania projects take two to four months from contract to permission to operate, accounting for design, permits, utility approval, and weather. Larger or complex roofs or backlog seasons can add time.

#### What is the average solar installation timeline in Ohio?

Typical roof work and panel installation are often completed in about one day, but outliers based on system size and complexity might take additional time. From signed contract to utility permission to operate, many Ohio homeowners see about eight to fourteen weeks, depending on permit speed, utility queues, and season. Custom equipment or structural upgrades can extend that window.

#### What solar equipment does Lifestyle Solar install?

We use Tier-1 monocrystalline panels and premium inverters from leading manufacturers. Every component is rated for Pennsylvania and Ohio climate conditions. Our installations include 25-year panel warranties and 12-year inverter warranties, backed by our own workmanship guarantee.

### System Performance & Lifespan

#### Do panels work in cloudy weather?

Yes. Solar panels still produce on cloudy days. Your system is designed around local weather patterns and still delivers real savings.

#### How long do panels last?

Modern panels last 25-30+ years. Most are warranted to produce at least 80% of original output after 25 years.

#### Can I go completely off-grid with solar?

Technically possible but rarely practical or cost-effective. Net metering through your utility lets you use the grid as a virtual battery, far cheaper than sizing a system for 100% off-grid use. Most of our customers reduce their bill by 80-100% while staying grid-connected.

### Battery Backup & Storage

#### What is solar battery storage and how does it work?

Solar battery storage is a rechargeable home battery paired with your solar system. During the day, excess solar that would otherwise go to the grid charges the battery. At night or during an outage, your house draws from the battery instead of the utility. The battery basically shifts your solar production from when you make it to when you actually need it.

#### What's the difference between solar battery storage and solar battery backup?

They describe two uses of the same hardware. "Storage" emphasizes shifting solar from day to night to reduce your bill. "Backup" emphasizes keeping your lights on when the grid goes down. The same physical battery does both jobs. Which value matters more to you affects whether the math works out.

#### How much does a home solar battery cost in PA?

Most Pennsylvania installers price a fully installed home battery between $10,000 and $15,000 each. Lifestyle Solar's typical install runs $8,000–$9,000 per battery. A single-battery essentials backup (fridge, lights, internet, a few outlets) lands at the low end of that range. A two-battery whole-home or near-whole-home backup is closer to the high end. The federal residential tax credit for batteries was eliminated on January 1, 2026, so this is now out-of-pocket spend.

#### Is solar battery storage worth it in Pennsylvania?

For most PA homeowners on flat-rate utility plans with current net metering rules, a battery doesn't pay for itself on bill savings alone, the grid acts as your free battery via net metering credits. A battery becomes worth it when you experience frequent outages, you have medical or sump-pump loads that can't tolerate downtime, your utility moves to time-of-use rates, or you simply value the security and have budgeted for it.

#### Can solar battery storage power my whole house?

A single battery covers essential loads, fridge, lights, internet, phone chargers, a sump pump, for 8–12 hours. Two batteries stretch coverage to most of the home, though central AC and electric dryers usually need to be excluded from backup circuits. Powering everything including AC continuously through a long outage requires either more batteries or pairing the battery with a smaller standby generator.

#### How long do home solar batteries last?

Tesla Powerwall 3, Enphase IQ Battery, and Generac PWRcell all ship with 10-year warranties. In practice, well-maintained lithium home batteries are expected to deliver useful capacity for 12–15 years before degrading enough to warrant replacement.

### Repairs, Maintenance & Warranty

#### Do you repair solar systems installed by other companies?

Yes. We service all major brands and system configurations, regardless of the original installer. Our technicians carry diagnostic equipment and common replacement parts so most repairs can be completed in a single visit.

#### How often should solar panels be cleaned?

We recommend at least two cleanings per year: once after winter to remove grime and residue, and once in early fall to clear leaf debris. Homes near trees or in dustier areas may benefit from quarterly cleaning for optimal output.

#### What does a solar maintenance visit include?

Our maintenance visits cover panel cleaning, electrical connection inspections, inverter diagnostics, mounting hardware checks, and a full production analysis. You receive a written report comparing current output to expected performance. Any issues found are flagged with repair recommendations.

#### What are the most common solar panel problems?

The most frequent issues we see are microinverter failures, degraded wiring connections from thermal cycling, and cracked cells from hail or debris. Pennsylvania and Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles can also loosen mounting hardware over time. All are straightforward repairs when caught early.
