# Solar for Duquesne Light Customers

Duquesne Light serves approximately 600,000 customers across Allegheny and Beaver counties in southwestern Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, the South Hills, North Hills, and surrounding suburbs. Their net metering program lets you earn credits for the solar energy your home produces.

## How net metering works

When your solar panels produce more electricity than your home needs, the excess flows to the Duquesne Light grid. You receive a kilowatt-hour credit on your account for that surplus energy. When your home needs more power than the panels produce (at night, for example), you draw from the grid and those credits offset the cost.

## How your bill changes

After going solar, your Duquesne Light bill still shows a monthly customer charge and any distribution fees. Your supply charges, though, get reduced or zeroed out by net metering credits. A lot of homeowners see their total bill drop to the minimum customer charge during high-production months.

## Annual true-up

Duquesne Light tracks your credits on a rolling 12-month cycle. At the end of the year, unused credits get reconciled. Pennsylvania law requires utilities to pay you for excess generation, though the rate varies. Sizing your system to match your annual usage gets you the most out of net metering.

## The interconnection process

1. **System design and permitting**, we design a system sized for your home and submit permit applications to your local municipality.
2. **Interconnection application**, we file the interconnection application with Duquesne Light on your behalf. This authorizes your system to connect to the grid.
3. **Installation and inspection**, after permits are approved, we install the system. Duquesne Light then schedules a meter inspection to verify the connection.
4. **Permission to operate**, once Duquesne Light approves the interconnection, you receive permission to operate and your system begins generating power.
