# Solar for AEP Ohio Customers

AEP Ohio (formerly Columbus Southern Power and Ohio Power) provides electricity to more than 1.5 million customers across central and southern Ohio, including Columbus, Dayton, Canton, and many surrounding communities. Their net metering program lets you earn credits for the solar energy your home produces.

## Net metering with AEP Ohio

AEP Ohio offers net metering to residential solar customers as required by Ohio law. When your system produces more electricity than your home uses, the excess energy gets exported to the grid and you earn a kilowatt-hour credit. Those credits offset your future electricity usage.

## How your bill changes

After installing solar, your AEP Ohio bill still includes a monthly customer charge and distribution fees. The generation portion (usually the biggest part) gets offset by your solar production and net metering credits. During high-production months, your bill may drop to just the basic service fees.

## Credit carryover

AEP Ohio carries your net metering credits forward from month to month. Surplus energy generated during sunny summer months can offset higher usage in winter. At the end of the annual period, any remaining excess credits get settled at the utility's avoided-cost rate.

## The AEP Ohio interconnection process

1. **Consultation and system design**, we assess your energy usage and property to design a system that matches your needs.
2. **Interconnection application**, we file the interconnection application with AEP Ohio on your behalf.
3. **AEP review and engineering**, AEP Ohio reviews the application and performs any required engineering studies. Most residential systems pass review without complications.
4. **Installation and meter setup**, after AEP approves the interconnection, we install the panels and coordinate the bi-directional meter setup with the utility.
5. **Permission to operate**, once AEP Ohio completes their final inspection and grants permission to operate, your system goes live and begins generating credits.

## AEP Ohio service territory
